I’m loving the makeup look created by Dick Page, Shiseido’s Artistic Director, at Tess Giberson’s New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015 Show. It’s “a simple adaption of the idea of aquatic elements and mixing synthetics and naturals,” says Page. Giberson’s idea of weaving together combinations of synthetic materials with natural materials was his inspiration to translate the makeup look into iridescent blue eye and warm skin.

Recreate the Look:

  • Eyes: The sparkly, “inky” blue liner from the Sparkling Party Palette (NEW! for Fall 2014) was blended around the eye and topped with the pale iridescent blue from the Luminizing Satin Eye Color Trio in Static (BL215). Eyes were finished with the Perfect Mascara Full Definition in black, applied to upper lashes only.
  • Brows: The brows were filled in with a variety of Shimmering Cream Eye Colors in Caviar (BK912), Sable (BR709), Leather (BR306), Sunshower (OR313) and Meadow (BE204).
  • Face/Cheek: Custom color created for each model using Bronzer and Luminizing Satin Face Color.

Beauty and the Brow

Take a good look in the mirror. Could your brows use some work? If so, don’t even think about touching them right now. Instead, mark your calendar for this Friday, June 13th, aka Eyebrow Intervention Day in the beauty world!

“The perfect brow can transform anyone’s look, making it more stylish and beautiful,” says celebrity brow guru, Ramy Gafni. “Eyebrow Intervention Day is your opportunity to lift, shape and style your brows flawlessly.”

On June 13th from 11:00am to 7:00pm at LOOK Boutiques at Duane Reade and Walgreens stores nationwide Ramy  and his team of trained RAMY Bar Staffers will be offering FREE brow consultations and shapings (a $20 value). Walk-ins are welcome but guarantee a slot by scheduling an appointment ahead of time. Click here for a complete list of participating locations.

If you can’t make it in for an appointment follow Ramy’s Rules:

– When in doubt, don’t pluck it out!
– When tweezing or trimming eyebrows, always take a conservative approach.
– Follow nature! Eyebrows that follow your bone structure will always be flattering.
– When filling in brows, regardless of what product formula you use, always brush it through. This removes the excess product and blends what’s left behind. You’re left with a perfect looking eyebrow, not a made-up looking eyebrow.

I’m definitely attending!  xoxoNancy

Big Day Beauty: Skincare Tips from Dr. Jeanine Downie

“Tis the season for special events like weddings, proms, graduation parties and more. Whether you’ve got a big day coming up or you want to look your best all the time The Beauty Wall has the tips for you, courtesy of Dr. Jeanine Downie, a top dermatologist based in Montclair, NJ.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. A good skin care regimen should begin weeks before your big event. Include gentle cleansers, like Neutrogena Ultra-Gentle Cleanser or Aveeno Ultra-Calming Cleanser.  Use sunblock with an spf 30 or more every day rain or shine regardless of your ethnicity.  Dr. Downie also recommends the Aveeno Faces spf 30 and the Neutrogena Dry Touch 55.  Don’t forget to moisturize your body including heels, elbows and knees. Dr. Downie likes Aveeno Eczema Relief for the Body. Drink a lot of water, get enough exercise and plenty of rest.

DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT USING A TANNING BED. Tanning beds increase your risk of melanoma by 75% and age your skin significantly. If you must tan get a spray tan (as long as you don’t have asthma) or use a topical self-tanning agent like Neutrogena Micromist.

GET A FACIAL. If you have acne get it one week before your special event.  If you don’t have acne, 3 days before is ideal. The peels available in a dermatologist’s office are stronger than salon/spa facials and can give you more of a glow factor. Dr. Downie likes chemical peels with glycolic or salicylic acid since they help with tone, texture, acne and fine lines.

ADDRESS YOUR BACNE. It’s hard to treat.  Dr. Downie recommends oral antibiotics, topical anti-acne treatments, at home masques, chemical peels and laser treatments.  The quickest way to begin to get rid of it is to use oral antibiotics and salicylic acid peels or modified Jessner’s peels (Vitalize or Rejuvenize peels).  Some bacne can take more than a year to go away, some is chronic and lasts a lifetime.

NEVER SQUEEZE A CYST. Leave it to the pros–to prevent scarring and/or pitting leave it alone and have your dermatologist inject it instead.

And the Award Goes To…

The big night has come and gone and the 86th annual Academy Awards in Hollywood at the Dolby Theatre did not disappoint. We knew Ellen would entertain, make a few cracks and still remain lovable. And chances were good that Lupita, Jared, and McConaughey would take home golden statues…but when it comes to “the look” who got the highest rankings from The Beauty Wall?

While I loved Jennifer Lawrence’s orange-red Dior, Amy Adams in Gucci and Lupita Nyong’o’s Prada it was Cate Blanchett who stole the show! Her gorgeous nude Giorgio Armani Prive gown with Swarovski crystals and sequins was age, occasion and attention-grabbing appropriate and her hair and makeup was just right.

Makeup artist Jeanine Lobell created the  timeless “Modern Movie Star” look for Blanchett. Here, the products she used so you can copy it at home:

EYES-
Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Eyeshadow Quad #2 Effeto Nudo – Jeanine used the warm taupe shade all over as a base; the deeper taupe on the lid and feathered it into the crease to open up the eye; the light brown was mixed with the deeper taupe and applied to the outer crease and center; and the darkest brown was wet and used as a liner

Troy Surratt Lash Curler

Lancôme Hypnôse Waterproof Custom Volume Mascara – After cutting a strip of false lashes and applying to the corner of the eye, Jeanine applied the mascara to the base of the lashes and pressed it in to give her real lashes a false effect

Makeup Forever Brow Gel

FACE-
SK-II Facial Treatment Essence – Jeanine patted this into the skin before applying foundation to allow her to use a more lightweight foundation and to ensure it will stay put all night long

Giorgio Armani Sheer Blush #10 Beige – Jeanine applied this to the apples of Cate’s cheeks and feathered it out before applying a second coat to ensure she looked like she was glowing from within

LIPS-
Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy Lipstick in #103 – Jeanine finished the look with this creamy, beige-y pink

Skin Savers

Fashion Week was a whirlwind, not only for the editors, writers and buyers that attended the shows but also for the models that walked down the runways. Yes, most are genetically blessed with “gorgeous” genes but that doesn’t mean the pre-show preps of fittings, running around in the biting cold and early-to-late hours wouldn’t take as much a toll on their skin as it would for you or me.

Designer Richard Chai was taking no chances. He teamed up with Dr. Jart+ to guarantee his models looked their best. Here’s what it took to get them runway-ready:

“Richard Chai is all about dewy, fresh skin,” says Joy Fennell, Lead Makeup Artist for Dr. Jart+.  For this show, she relied on the V7 Cleansing Foam, Water Fuse Water-Full Hydrogel Mask, Ceramidin Liquid, and Ceramidin Cream to help achieve a radiant complexion.

Dr. Jart+ V7 Cleansing FoamThe V7 Cleansing Foam not only removes old make-up but brightens and calms dull, stressed skin, making it an easy choice for backstage use.  Formulated with a super antioxidant blend containing 7 essential vitamins, this cleanser neutralizes free radicals to restore stressed skin.
Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Water-Full Hydrogel MaskLike a glass of water for your skin, the Water Fuse Water-Full Hydrogel Mask infuses moisture into dry and dehydrated skin within minutes of applying.  Made with a unique hydrogel material that locks in moisture, the mask also contains hyaluronic acid and natural extracts to restore elasticity and bounce to the skin, providing a little TLC during the backstage frenzy.
Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Liquid and Ceramidin CreamConstantly having makeup removed and applied to the face can cause some serious irritation, but models were saved by the quick, soothing relief of Ceramidin Liquid and Ceramide Cream.  Jam-packed with micro-encapsulated ceramides, these powerful moisturizers smoothen and soften the models’ dry, itchy skin, helping to creating the perfect blank canvas for makeup.  Dr. Jart+’s patented ceramide stabilization technology also ensures the ceramides are able to penetrate deeper into the lipid layer, enhancing the skin’s natural strength and ensuring it stays well-hydrated throughout the day.

Review: The Woodhouse Day Spa

I was recently invited to experience the The Woodhouse Day Spa in downtown Summit, NJ. It couldn’t have come at a better time. I was stressed, had knots in my shoulders and had lost my inner calm and my outer glow — turns out this little window of “me time” was the cure-all I needed.

I was greeted by Chuck Marr, the warm and welcoming General Manager, who offered me a choice of teas from my favorite brand (Harney & Sons) and directed me to the changing room where I slipped into the coziest robe I’ve ever had the pleasure of wearing and a comfy pair of Sensi Spa Sandals. In the Quiet Room down the hall my tea was waiting and I was given a heated, herbal neck wrap. Being a new guest, I filled out a brief form of my personal preferences and health information.

After a sip or two of tea I realized I was already relaxed. The plush robe, subtle aromatherapy, low-key spa music and the Quiet Room (dimly lit and furnished in pale hues, luxurious chairs, chaises and couches, plus healthy snacks for the taking) had done the trick…and I hadn’t even had my treatment yet. Clearly, they knew what they were doing!

My therapist, Luba, greeted me and led me to a private room where she worked her magic during my Advanced Anti-Aging Facial with a Microdermabrasion Facial Enhancement which included cleansing, extractions, toning, strategic massage, glycolic acid, microdermabrasion, skincare plus a shoulder, head and foot massage. Not only was I left glowing but I felt pampered, taken care of and nurtured…like I’d been at a destination spa for a week rather than a day spa for less than two hours.

After my treatment I was introduced to Veeran and Madhuri Reddy, co-owners of the spa. They excel at attention to detail and live and breathe the Woodhouse philosophy of  “give your guests one step beyond what they need.” Mission accomplished!

You can even bring a little bit of your experience home…the Naturopathica products (known for being extremely gentle and super effective) used throughout the treatments are available for purchase as are the robes, tea, aromatherapy and more. This is more than a day spa, it’s a sanctuary…and I plan on becoming a regular!!!

The spa is open for business so feel free to book now and enjoy your treatments before the official Grand Opening on Saturday, February 8, 2014. For more information, to book an appointment or inquire about special packages: The Woodhouse Day Spa, 420 Springfield Avenue, Summit, NJ 07901 (908) 608-1120. Click here for their spa menu.

Party Starter!

Some days I have back to back events. Though they’re usually quite informative and lots of fun it can be stressful when one ends after the next one begins and I still have a third one to get to. Imagine my surprise (and joy!) when I opened the door to my final event of the day and saw a woman greeting me holding a martini glass with a scoop of ice cream! And not just any ice cream but booze-infused ice cream. If that’s not the best way to get a party started I don’t know what is!

Tipsy Scoop is an artisanal ice cream/cocktail hybrid, available in 18+ flavors like Kahlua Banana, Cake Batter Vodka Martini, Salted Caramel Apple Brandy, St. Germain & Tequila Mexican “Hot” Chocolate and Mango Margarita. Each serving contains about 5% alcohol so it will definitely do the trick and it’s delicious to boot!  Hmmmm….booze-infused ice cream…why didn’t I think of that!!!

Tipsy Scoop will cater your NYC event. Click here for more information.
