Hair Flair!

Book Review: The New Braiding Handbook: 60 Modern Twists on the Classic Hairstyle

If you usually leave your hair down or pull it back into a ponytail like me this book will get you out of your style rut and shake things up a bit. “The New Braiding Handbook” will help you master the trendiest twists, fishtails and updos. It has easy-to-follow instructions and step-by-step photos to learn how to do the Celtic Knot, the Waterfall Ponytail, the Dutch Braided Headband and many, many more–60 all together to be exact!

Though I’m not sure all the styles are quite right for me, there are those that I can’t wait to wear. And my tween daughter Emma is all over this book! We’ve had a lot of fun practicing a few of the styles and her and her friends have been getting in on the action, too. In fact, they’ve been loving it so much that this might be her go-to birthday gift for a while. Have fun braiding! xoxoNancy

Ballerina Girl

Product Review: Linge Shoes Ballet Flats

I love sky high heels as much as the next girl…as long as I’m sitting down. The moment I have to walk around in them, I’m miserable, which is why my flip-flops get more than their fair share of play time. Looks like my summer staple has some competition.

Enter Linge ballet shoes. They’re made from soft, top-quality leather so they’re super comfy and a breeze to slip on and off. They’re really light (ie. portable!) so perfect to pop in my bag for easy, quick access if I need to step out of my heels and into something that’ll show my feet some love, plus they look great with skirts, dresses, jeans and shorts.

I definitely found a new shoe to get me through the summer. Linge Shoes Ballet Flats are light, super-stylish and come in 12 gorgeous colors–just what the foot-doctor ordered!

Beauty and the Brow

Take a good look in the mirror. Could your brows use some work? If so, don’t even think about touching them right now. Instead, mark your calendar for this Friday, June 13th, aka Eyebrow Intervention Day in the beauty world!

“The perfect brow can transform anyone’s look, making it more stylish and beautiful,” says celebrity brow guru, Ramy Gafni. “Eyebrow Intervention Day is your opportunity to lift, shape and style your brows flawlessly.”

On June 13th from 11:00am to 7:00pm at LOOK Boutiques at Duane Reade and Walgreens stores nationwide Ramy  and his team of trained RAMY Bar Staffers will be offering FREE brow consultations and shapings (a $20 value). Walk-ins are welcome but guarantee a slot by scheduling an appointment ahead of time. Click here for a complete list of participating locations.

If you can’t make it in for an appointment follow Ramy’s Rules:

– When in doubt, don’t pluck it out!
– When tweezing or trimming eyebrows, always take a conservative approach.
– Follow nature! Eyebrows that follow your bone structure will always be flattering.
– When filling in brows, regardless of what product formula you use, always brush it through. This removes the excess product and blends what’s left behind. You’re left with a perfect looking eyebrow, not a made-up looking eyebrow.

I’m definitely attending!  xoxoNancy

Sole Saving

Product Review: Emjoi Micro-Pedi Nano

I love a good sandal…and the warm weather had me very excited to go shoe shopping…until I checked out my feet. How didn’t I notice that they’d morphed into something I most certainly didn’t want to show off–my hard, cracked heels and scaly feet needed a remedy and fast!

My crazy, busy schedule meant that the earliest I could book a pedi was a few days away. And then I remembered I had something in my “Products to Review” basket.  The Emjoi Micro-Pedi Nano was certainly worth a try and I could even do it while watching Andie whittle down her list of suiters–I know there are other The Bachelorette fans out there!–but I wasn’t canceling my appointment just yet.

Emjoi’s Micro-Pedi Nano is an at-home, hand-held device that gently and easily turns feet silky. The unique roller spins 360 degrees, at an incredible 30 times a second, effectively buffing away hard, dead skin. Really!

It’s completely painless and I actually felt a weird sort of satisfaction watching the dry, hard skin literally turn to dust to reveal the healthier, soft skin below. The fact that it’s  accepted by the American Podiatric Medical Association as beneficial to foot health is just the icing on the cake.

Emjoi lived up to its promise and then some. This just might be the miracle solution you’re looking for. It is for me!

To purchase: Emjoi Micro-Pedi Nano, $24.95 at emjoi.com

Cool-Girl Makeup

I can’t get Emma Stone’s beauty look from the recent Met Gala out of my mind. Her relaxed side braid and bronzey makeup is a look I plan on mimic-ing all throughout the summer. Best of all, t’s easier than ever to recreate this look.

For the bronzed cheeks and shimmery eyes I’ll rely on an old staple–Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick, $42 at bobbibrowncosmetics.com. I’m loving the new limited edition shade in Apricot with 5 hues that complement a broad range of complexions, but it also comes in Rose, Pink Quartz, Bronze, Beige and Nectar if you’re looking for a little something different. Because it’s super shimmery a little goes a long way–one compact will last and last.

After using the Shimmer Brick on eyes and cheeks, coat lashes with dark brown or black mascara and slick on a sheer, rosy-toned lipstick.  You’re good to go.

See…easy!

Hot Buns How-to

When it comes to beauty, Emily Blunt can do no wrong! She always looks smart, sophisticated and sexy. Her look at the “Edge of Tomorrow” NYC premiere is certainly no exception.

Celebrity hairstylist Laini Reeves of Tomlinson Management Group  created Emily’s sleek, simple, side bun to echo the modern lines of her sleek, lipstick red Prada gown.

Here’s how she did it:

  1. First, Reeves prepped Emily’s wet hair with René Furterer VEGETAL MOUSSE and gave it a smooth blowout with a soft-bristle round brush.
  2. Then, she misted Emily’s hair with René Furterer VEGETAL FINISHING SPRAY before giving it  a low side part and securing the ponytail.
  3. Another spritz of the FINISHING SPRAY guaranteed extra hold before she twisted the ponytail into a bun at the nape of the neck behind the ear and secured it with bobby pins.

Laini Reeves Troubleshooting Tips:

  • To create texture lightly back-comb the ponytail to make the hair easier to secure.
  • When styling your own look, always make sure everything is perfect before preparing the bun.
  • A small amount of René Furterer STYLING WAX will smooth flyaways.
